$245 million courthouse construction launched in downtown Ft. Lauderdale

A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday (Nov. 8) to launch construction on the future U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida being built at 1080 S.E. Third Ave. in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The building is expected to be finished in the fall of 2026.

The project has been “decades in the making” and ensures the federal court system will continue to have a presence in Broward County,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis. ”The existing courthouse had long ago become too small for the considerable caseload that occurs in a major metro area and suffered from multiple structural issues.

“There were times when it looked like our area would be folded into the courthouses in Miami and West Palm Beach, but the dogged work of numerous business and governmental leaders ensured that did not occur,” Trantalis said.
