Timeline extended, budget increased and for Naples Pier reconstruction

Naples City Council has extended the timeline and increased the budget for the Naples Pier reconstruction project to rebuild the pier that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022.

A resolution was passed to provide $1.4 million to Turrell, Hall & Associates Inc., the engineering and design firm managing the project for ongoing work and to update the project’s completion deadline to Nov. 15, 2026.

Additional funds are for preconstruction work including:

  • Preconstruction coordination and oversight
  • Permit compliance
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency coordination
  • Specialized monitoring (such as dive studies, piling inspections, etc.)
  • Historical context and damage

Hurricane Ian’s storm surge destroyed 460 feet of the structure.

The Naples Pier is an iconic landmark originally built in 1888. Since this time, the pier has been rebuilt after hurricanes in 1910, 1926, 1944, and 1960. In 2015 it was reconstructed and damaged again in 2017 by Hurricane Irma.

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian caused catastrophic damage to the structure. Approximately 460 feet of the pier has significant damage, with about 140 feet of the end sitting at the bottom of the Gulf.

The shelter at the end of the pier and over 30+ pilings make up the 140 feet of missing pier. As you walk the remaining pier, the first major structural item of concern is located at bent 21, which is 13 bents (concrete beam that connects the three pilings together) past the stairs. All three piles at bent 21 have a new crack just below the bent. After bent 21 the structural damage seems to increase significantly moving west toward the remaining pier.
