NASA Causeway bridge in Brevard County opens ahead of schedule, supporting growing space industry traffic

The NASA Causeway Bridge in Brevard County has been completed ahead of schedule, with the second of two bridges opening six months earlier than planned, opening to traffic March 19.The upgraded bridges, which stretch 4,025 feet over the Indian River, are taller and wider than the previous structures. As fixed spans, they eliminate the need for drawbridge openings, improving traffic flow. Once the new bridge opens, traffic will transition to its final configuration—westbound vehicles will use the newly completed bridge, while the existing bridge will be dedicated to eastbound traffic. This $128 million project was made possible through a strong collaboration between multiple organizations.

The first of the two bridges was completed 125 days ahead of schedule in 2023 and has already supported over 1,000 space industry transports. It has played a crucial role in serving launch partners at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, including NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense.

In addition, the recent completion of the 2.7-mile widening of Space Commerce Way in late 2024—from NASA Parkway West to Kennedy Parkway—expanded the road from two to four lanes, accommodating oversized loads traveling to and from Kennedy Space Center, Exploration Park, and the region’s growing space industry hubs.
