Special to Florida Construction News
As Tampa continues to grow as a regional hub for advanced healthcare, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is expanding its campus to meet the needs of a rapidly increasing patient population.
One of the most significant developments is the North Pavilion Project, a 13-story, 565,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art medical facility currently under construction on Davis Islands in Downtown Tampa. For B&I Contractors, the project represents a major healthcare milestone and a continuation of the company’s long-standing commitment to complex, high impact medical construction across Florida.
The North Pavilion is designed to become the new home for Tampa General’s surgical, neuroscience, and transplant services. Once complete, the facility will feature 144 patient beds, 32 operating suites, and expanded intensive care unit (ICU) capacity, significantly enhancing TGH’s ability to deliver specialized and lifesaving care. The building will also include critical support spaces such as sterile processing, emergency response areas, and education and training facilities to support both clinical operations and the next generation of healthcare professionals. Two additional floors have been reserved for future growth, ensuring long term flexibility as medical technology and patient needs evolve.
Located within an active hospital campus, the project requires precise coordination and careful planning to maintain safety and minimize disruptions to ongoing operations. B&I Contractors’ piping and sheet metal teams are currently making strong progress on installation, supporting the complex mechanical systems essential to a high-performance healthcare environment.
“TGH North Pavilion install is off to a great start by our piping and sheet metal crews. Exciting to see the fruits of all the hard work from the entire B&I team on this project.” -Ashley Fernandez, Vice President West Central
Healthcare construction presents unique challenges, particularly in facilities that house advanced surgical and transplant services. Systems must be installed with precision to ensure reliability, infection control, and uninterrupted operation.
B&I’s experience in large-scale healthcare projects allows the team to anticipate these challenges early and work collaboratively with project partners to deliver solutions that meet the hospital’s demanding standards.
As the North Pavilion continues to rise, it stands as a visible investment in the future of healthcare for the Tampa Bay region. The expanded capacity will allow Tampa General Hospital to serve more patients, perform more complex procedures, and continue its role as a nationally recognized academic medical center.
For B&I Contractors, the project reinforces the company’s reputation as a trusted partner in healthcare construction. Through skilled craftsmanship, coordination, and a shared commitment to quality, B&I is helping deliver a facility that will support patient care, clinical excellence, and community health for decades to come.
